National Rock Climbing Centre
The project was completed in 2003.
The challenge was to construct Europe's largest indoor adventure training and climbing centre. The solution was to convert a disused rock quarry in a project involving the removal of 250,000 tons of rubble revealing rock walls that had been hidden for more than a century.
The natural rock walls were integrated into the design. Huge steel structures were used to support a tensioned fabric roof. The spectacular rock arena is the largest indoor hall in the East of Scotland. A five-storey structure was built into the neck of the bottle-shaped quarry complete with a cinema screening room, state-of-the-art gym, restaurant, accommodation, judo dojo, Scuba diving pool, and office space. The remainder of the quarry was formed into a huge open amphitheatre for public performances.
